What is “Coronavirus/es” ?
Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses which may cause illness in animals, birds and humans.
Studies has helped to identify different symptoms in different species. In chickens, they cause an upper respiratory tract disease, while in cows and pigs they cause diarrhea.
And in humans, coronaviruses cause respiratory tract infections that can be mild, such as some cases of the common cold and others that can be lethal, such as SARS – Severe acute respiratory syndrome, MERS – Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS), also known as COVID-19.
What is “Covid-19″(Coronavirus 2019)?
COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by a new virus.
The disease causes respiratory illness with symptoms such as a cough, fever, and in more severe cases, difficulty in breathing.
Why is it called “Covid-19” or “2019 Novel Coronavirus” ?
A series of unknown cause detected in Wuhan, China, was first reported to the WHO Country Office in China on 31 December 2019.
In related to this, on February 11, 2020 the World Health Organization announced an official name for the disease that was causing the ‘2019 novel coronavirus’ outbreak, first identified in Wuhan, China. The name of this disease is “Coronavirus Disease 2019” , abbreviated as COVID-19.
In COVID-19, ‘CO’ stands for ‘corona,’ ‘VI’ for ‘virus,’ and ‘D’ for disease. Formerly, this disease was referred to as “2019 novel (novel refers to new) coronavirus” or “2019-nCoV”. Here, the word Novel is derived from Latin word ‘Novellus’, means, ‘New, Young, Fresh’.
